Care Guidelines
Aquarium Setup: Peacock Cichlids thrive in spacious aquariums that replicate their natural environment. A tank size of at least 150 liters (40 gallons) is recommended. Decorate with rocks, caves, and sandy substrates to provide hiding spots and territories while leaving open swimming areas. Good water circulation, efficient filtration, and a stable temperature are essential.
Water Parameters: Maintain water with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5 and a temperature between 24°C and 28°C. These cichlids prefer hard, alkaline water, similar to their natural Lake Malawi habitat. Regular water changes and monitoring are critical to keep their environment healthy and stable.
Diet: Peacock Cichlids are omnivorous, thriving on a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with occasional frozen or live foods like brine shrimp or daphnia. Avoid feeding them protein-rich foods like mammalian meat, as it can harm their digestive systems. Regular feedings of spirulina or vegetable-based foods support their vibrant coloration and health.
Growth and Maintenance: These cichlids grow moderately, reaching a full size of 12–15 cm. They are relatively hardy but require consistent care to thrive. Regularly clean the tank, remove uneaten food, and maintain proper water parameters to ensure their well-being.
Compatibility:
Peacock Cichlids are semi-aggressive but generally do well in community setups with other Lake Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament. Ideal tankmates include Haps and other peaceful to moderately aggressive cichlids. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive species or very small fish that may be seen as prey. Maintaining a male-to-female ratio of 1:3 can help minimize aggression.
