The Discus, often referred to as the "King of the Aquarium," is renowned for its vibrant colours and graceful presence. Originating from the Amazon Basin, these cichlids are a centerpiece in freshwater aquariums, admired for their disc-shaped bodies and dynamic patterns.

Care Guidelines:

  • Aquarium Setup: A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended for a small group of Discus. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with subdued lighting and gentle water flow. Incorporate vertical driftwood and broad-leaf plants like Amazon Swords to provide shelter and mimic their natural habitat.

  • Water Parameters: Maintain soft, slightly acidic water with a pH between 5.8 and 6.5. Consistent temperatures between 28°C and 31°C are crucial. Regular water changes, at least 25% twice per week, are essential to uphold water quality.

  • Feeding: Discus are omnivorous and benefit from a varied diet. Offer high-quality flake or pellet foods supplemented with live or frozen options such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Including vegetable matter like spirulina is also beneficial.

  • Behavior and Compatibility: Discus are peaceful and social, preferring to be in groups of five or more. Suitable tank mates include small, non-aggressive species like Rummy-nose Tetras and Corydoras catfish. Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping species.
