Assorted Angelfish - Pterophyllum scalare
$44.99
Assorted Angelfish are a stunning and elegant addition to any freshwater aquarium. Known for their graceful swimming and striking variety of colours and patterns, these cichlids are a favourite among aquarists. Originating from the slow-moving waters of the Amazon Basin, Angelfish have been selectively bred into many different colour morphs, including Silver, Marble, Koi, Zebra, Gold, and Veil Tail varieties. Their distinctive, triangular shape and long, flowing fins make them a standout species in community tanks.
Species: Pterophyllum scalare
Common Names: Freshwater Angelfish, Scalare Angelfish
Origin: South America (Amazon River Basin)
Light Requirements: Low to Moderate
Diet: Omnivorous (Enjoys a mix of plant and protein-based foods)
Maximum Size: 15 cm (6 inches) in body height, up to 25 cm (10 inches) including fins
Temperament: Semi-Peaceful (Can be territorial, especially during breeding)
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Angelfish thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of vertical space for swimming. A minimum tank size of 100 litres (25 gallons) is recommended for a small group, though larger tanks are preferable for long-term care. They prefer a slow to moderate water flow and appreciate natural décor such as driftwood, broad-leaf plants, and caves for shelter.
Due to their tall bodies, taller aquariums are better suited for Angelfish. They do well in community tanks but should not be kept with overly aggressive or fin-nipping species.
Temperature: 24°C – 28°C
pH: 6.5 – 7.5
Hardness: 3 – 10 dGH
Ammonia/Nitrites: 0 ppm
Nitrates: <20 ppm
Angelfish grow at a moderate rate and should be fed a varied diet, including high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods (such as bloodworms and brine shrimp), and vegetable matter. A protein-rich diet enhances their colouration and overall health.
Regular water changes and stable conditions are essential to prevent stress and common diseases such as fin rot or ich. Angelfish can be territorial, especially during breeding, so providing adequate space helps minimise aggression.
Provide a tall, well-planted tank with open swimming areas.
Maintain stable water conditions and perform regular water changes.
Offer a varied diet to promote colour and vitality.
Keep in small groups to encourage natural social behaviour.
Avoid fin-nipping species such as Tiger Barbs or aggressive cichlids.
Angelfish are generally peaceful but may become territorial, especially during breeding. They do well with:
Tetras (such as Rummy Nose, Cardinal, or Black Skirt Tetras)
Corydoras Catfish
Peaceful Gouramis
Plecos and other non-aggressive bottom dwellers
Avoid keeping them with very small fish like Neon Tetras (which may be eaten when Angelfish mature) or aggressive species like African Cichlids.
