Aquaforest Hybrid Pro Salt
Vendor:AquaforestRegular price From $64.99Regular priceUnit price / perThe Aquaforest most advanced reef salt
Aquaforest Hybrid Pro Salt is the most advanced sea salt created for use in the most demanding marine aquariums. Its unique formula makes it a unique product on the aquarium market. Hybrid Pro Salt was inspired by years of observation of both aquariums run on natural seawater and those using chemically pure laboratory salt. It is impossible to determine unequivocally which method is “the better one”, so we decided to combine the strengths of one and the other in one product – Aquaforest Hybrid Pro Salt.
Hybrid Pro Salt is the most advanced aquarium salt formula that combines the best of both worlds. On the one hand, we use the chemically purest laboratory salt, which guarantees stability and predictability of water parameters. On the other hand, we add flakes of natural salt extracted from the purest waters of the Atlantic to ensure a wealth of micronutrients. In addition, the salt is enriched with probiotic bacteria. These beneficial microorganisms take care of water purity, control nitrate and phosphate levels, which affects the healthy growth of corals and their proper coloration. This is especially important in breeding the most demanding SPS corals. It is worth noting that Hybrid Pro Salt is much more than just salt. It’s a comprehensive formula that provides corals with everything they need for proper development. It contains micro- and macro-elements in the right amounts, as well as amino acids and supporting the health and condition of underwater fauna – vitamin C.
Unique hybrid salt formula designed by specialists
Hybrid Pro Salt is the result of years of research and experience. We collected, and then tested, water samples from coral reefs in Egypt, Kenya, Indonesia and Fiji. As a result, we gained confidence that the parameters obtained after preparing the brine perfectly meet the needs of even the most demanding corals. Unlike the ocean, an aquarium is a closed system in which the consumption of selected elements takes place much faster, so we decided to raise the levels of the most consumed micronutrients such as strontium and iodine. All this to create a formula that will support the healthy development of fish and corals on a daily basis.
What makes Hybrid Pro Salt unique?
- Hybrid Pro Salt incorporates chemically pure, laboratory-made salt with natural sea salt flakes from the cleanest waters of the North Atlantic Ocean
- Proprietary blend of probiotic bacteria to reduce nitrate and phosphate levels while increasing color intensity and growth potential often inhibited by high phosphate levels.
- Has a number of micro and macro trace elements and enriched with the highest quality amino acids and vitamins aiding in immunity and natural metabolic functions.
By choosing Aquaforest products, you can be sure that the salt you choose will be safe for your aquarium, and that the parameters obtained will not differ from those declared. Each batch of Aquaforest Hybrid Pro Salt is tested in a specialized laboratory. An experienced team of laboratory technicians performs a thorough analysis on two ICP-OES spectrometers. One for micronutrient content, the other for macronutrient content. The results of these tests are available online.

TIPS
- We recommend keeping the dKH between 7.5-8.5 to help the probiotic bacteria reproduce. Higher/lower levels may reduce bacterial activity
- When setting up new aquariums, we recommend introducing the first fish/corals no earlier than 10-14 days after the tank is established and water parameters stabilized

Note: Even though our salt is thoroughly mixed, not every bucket/box will be identical. The parameters can vary slightly between containers and around a 2-3% variation is acceptable. This fluctuation is a result of both physical properties of the mix and the limitations of the processing techniques available. These variations are still smaller than the typical margin for error for popular hobbyist test kits.

Red Sea Seawater Refractometer
Vendor:Red SeaRegular price $125.00Regular priceUnit price / perRed Sea Seawater Refractometer
High Accuracy Seawater Refractometer
Red Sea’s Seawater Refractometer offers exceptional accuracy, for measuring the absolute salinity of seawater at a temperature of 25°C.
Most refractometers used within the aquarium hobby are not specifically designed for reef aquariums and use an algorithm for the measurement of brine (NaCl – rather than seawater) and at a temperature of 15oC/59 0F rather than 25oC/77 0F. Thus, a measurement deviation of up to 1.5ppt is possible, which can have a significant adverse effect on coral growth and coloration.Main features of Red Sea’s Seawater Refractometer include:
- Directly reads the absolute salinity of seawater at 25°C/77 0F ( No need for seawater or temperature compensation factors)
- Specifically designed for the ionic content of seawater (NSW) for more accurate salinity measurement (industry standard refractometers are calibrated for salt brine ).
- Calibrated for seawater (NSW) at 25oC/77oF, the normal temperature range for reef aquariums
- (most standard refractometers are calibrated at 15oC/59oF ).
- Easier to read, higher resolution display, focussed to the relevant range for reef aquariums of up to 40ppt
- Includes Integrated Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) for accurate measurement at standard ambient temperature.
Red Sea’s Refractometer displayThe PPT scale on Red Sea’s Seawater refractometer is calculated using an algorithm for seawater and therefore will give a reading of the Absolute Salinity of seawater.
The PPT scale on regular salinity refractometers are calculated using an algorithm for Brine. Using a Brine refractometer for Seawater will give an error of approximately 1.5ppt in the salinity reading.
About Salinity
Salinity is a general term describing the concentration of salt in water. However, solutions of different type of salts have different refractive indexes.
Brine is a solution of Sodium Chloride (table salt) that contains 2 chemical elements.
Seawater contains approximately 70 chemical elements that include Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium etc. in addition to the Sodium Chloride.
Seawater and Brine of the same salinity (i.e. the same weight of salt/liter) have different refractive indexes and will give different salinity readings if measured on the same refractometer.
Refraction & refractive index
- All transparent materials such as liquids refract (distort) light.
- All transparent materials refract light differently and have what is called a “refractive index” which means how much a particular material distorts light.
- Different concentrations of the same liquid have different refractive indexes.
- The scale of a refractometer is calculated by using a mathematical algorithm that relates the measured refraction to its concentration for a specific liquid.
Refractive index and temperature- The refractive index of liquids change with temperature and therefore has a major effect on measuring salinity with a refractometer.
- The algorithm for defining the PPT (and S.G.) scale for a refractometer is calculated for a specific temperature.
PPT readings from refractometers that are not calibrated for reef aquariums (i.e. 25oC) need to be adjusted according to a conversion table to give the actual PPT at the aquarium temperature. This is often a cause for misinterpretation of refractometer readings. For example, using a seawater refractometer calibrated at 20oC will give a PPT reading that is approximately 1-1.5ppt lower than the absolute salinity of the same water sample at the normal aquarium temperature of 25oC.
Therefore, Red Sea’s Seawater Refractometer calibrated at 25°C/77 0F directly reads the absolute salinity of seawater with no need for temperature compensation factor)
ATC – Automatic temperature compensationTemperature is probably the biggest cause of wrong readings with a refractometer. Calibration and testing of water samples should be done after the refractometer and water sample have equalised at the correct temperature.
Automatic temperature compensation (ATC) compensates for a few degrees of difference between the ambient temperature and the calibrated temperature of the refractometer. Larger temperature variations will give an error of approximately 1.0ppt in the salinity reading.
ATC does not adjust the PPT reading of a refractometer to the temperature of the aquarium!

Coral Pro Salt - The Foundation Elements …It’s all in the balance
Red Sea’s Coral Pro Salt contains biologically balanced, elevated levels of the foundation elements (Calcium, Magnesium, Carbonates) necessary for sustainable, accelerated coral growth. Coral Pro Salt is ideal for reef aquariums, in particular for LPS and SPS corals, and for growing coral frags.Natural seawater includes over 70 chemical elements and although most of the elements influence the water parameters, a few of them have a more significant role in its overall chemical stability.
These elements form the foundation of the reef environment and they include the three major elements: calcium, magnesium and bi-carbonates. These three ‘foundation elements’ have a major effect on the water chemistry (pH stability, alkalinity, seawater ionic strength) and on many of the coral’s biological processes (skeleton formation, ion- exchange, photosynthesis).
Unlike the natural reef environment, where there is an immense reservoir of the foundation elements, the reef aquarium has limited resources that are quickly depleted by the aquarium inhabitants. Therefore, in order to enable sustainable coral growth it is necessary to maintain higher than natural levels of the foundation elements.
Original research carried out in Red Sea’s laboratory has shown that in a closed system (an aquarium) a specific ratio between the foundation elements of calcium, magnesium and carbonates (alkalinity) is necessary for coral vitality and the formation of a robust aragonite coral skeleton. This ratio must be maintained especially when increasing the levels of the foundation elements above the natural sea levels.
Red Sea’s Coral Pro salt is made according to these ideal ratios and remove the need to adjust the levels of foundation elements after water changes and significantly improving the well-being of corals.

Continuum Basis African Cichlid Salts
Vendor:Continuum AquaticsRegular price From $19.99Regular priceUnit price / perThe Continuum advantage.
Basis African Cichlid Salts is a high quality, multi-component blended true hardness system, designed to add major, minor and trace minerals in proper ratios for rift lake fishes. It also works well for other freshwater fishes originating in hardwater environments. Basis African Cichlid Salts is not table salt, but a specially formulated blend of critical major minerals, together with minor and trace minerals, including iodine that are necessary for the health and spawning of rift lake cichlids. It also has special ingredients that lessen aggression!
Use in aquarium keeping.
First adjust the total hardness (dGH) of your rift lake aquarium with this product. It will not increase the pH or alkalinity (i.e. KH or carbonate hardness) of the aquarium, so it is necessary to add Basis African Cichlid Buffer after properly adjusting total hardness (dGH) using this product. For maximum results, use Continuum Cichlid Elements•T periodically, and after every water change, to replenish trace and minor minerals used up by natural aquatic processes, filtration and inhabitants.
Directions and protocol.
Dissolve 5-20 grams, about 1-4 teaspoons of product in 8 oz. ( 236 ml ) purified water for each 10 gallons (38 L) aquarium capacity, and add per day until the desired ppm or dGH are reached. When setting up a new aquarium, add as necessary to reach the desired dGH or ppm. For water changes, adjust prior to addition to the aquarium. For best results, use water purified by Reverse Osmosis or Deionization. Dechlorinated tap water can also be used, but this will negatively affect the final result no matter what brand of cichlid salts are used.
Recommended values:
For Lake Tanganyika conditions adjust the water to between 350 and 400 ppm general hardness (12 to 14 German degrees of total hardness, Gesamtehaerte or dGH). For Lake Malawi conditions adjust the water to about 200 ppm general hardness (7 dGH). For Lake Victoria conditions, adjust the water to about 150 ppm general hardness (5 dGH). Once recommended hardness is achieved, adjust the carbonate hardness or alkalinity (KH) using Basis African Cichlid Buffer according to the directions on that product.
Caution: Keep out of reach of children. Not for human consumption. Contains mineral salts, if ingested drink plenty of water, consult your medical practitioner. If in eyes flush with water for 15 minutes, if redness continues, consult your medical practitioner. If on skin flush with water.

INSTRUCTIONS & GUIDELINES
Do not mix in an aquarium containing live organisms. Marine creates slight heat when mixed into water; therefore, do not handle dry Marine with wet hands. Marine may have a slight sulfurous odor when the container is first opened; this is a result of the use of anhydrous magnesium chloride and sulfate and will dissipate.
Each 134.5 g of Marine added to sufficient purified water to create 1 US-gallon total saltwater will result in specific gravity of ~1.025 g/cm3. If not using an accurate scale to measure salt, in a clean mixing vessel dissolve approximately 4 oz., or half a cup, of Marine per gallon of purified water and adjust specific gravity as needed by adding more salt or water to increase/decrease specific gravity, respectively. It is strongly recommended that water purified via reverse osmosis and/or deionization be used for seawater preparation.
Place the full amount of water you intend to mix into a mixing vessel. Heat the water to 76 to 78 deg F first before adding Marine mix. Add Marine slowly, mixing vigorously all the while! Allow the freshly-made seawater to mix thoroughly with a submersible pump for not less than one hour.
Always use an accurate hydrometer or (preferably) refractometer to determine the specific gravity of prepared seawater. Ensure that the water temperature matches that of the established aquarium.
Allow water to mix, preferably while being aerated, until pH becomes completely stable, indicating that gas equilibrium has been achieved. Although water can be used in an hour, It is strongly recommended that at least 24-hours of mixing be allowed to pass before adding the water to an established aquarium; this extra time enables gas formed during the salt dissolution to escape, further stabilizing alkalinity and pH.
Note that water temperature and mixing rate will influence the speed with which the salt goes into solution. It is recommended that 10 - 20% of the total water volume in an aquarium system be replaced every 7 - 10 days; this helps maintain proper water chemistry and consequently benefits aquarium inhabitants.
Causes of Cloudiness: Marine is an anhydrous salt, meaning that is is much drier than most salts (which are hydrated meaning they contain water, quite a bit of it). If you add Marine to water too fast, it will cloud.
Water to cold. Always heat the water to 76 to 78 deg F before you begin.
Adding too much salt or adding it too fast, or just dumping it in and allowing it to lay on the bottom of the container without stirring and agitation. Cloudiness will form under these conditions.
Not using the full volume of water. Always use the full amount of water and gradually bring up the salinity in the mixing container, adding the salt over a period of time. If you don't you will get cloudiness.
What to do if you have mixed it wrong and it is cloudy: Cloudiness is not dangerous, it is just the formation of carbonates of divalent cations, such as calcium, into tiny particles. When added to the aquarium, it will dissolve over several days. Adding it through a fine filter sock may remove some of the particles and allow them to dissolve unseen, over time.
