Weaning
Parrot Soft Food is ideal to be used as a weaning food for hand-reared parrots when transitioning from Hand Rearing Food to a solid diet.
Pellet Conversion
Birds will readily transition from Parrot Soft Food to Crumbles or Parrot Pellets by mixing the two products together, and then gradually increasing the proportion of Crumbles or Pellets.

Directions
Prepare Hand Rearing Food by mixing powder with pre-boiled, warm water (approx. 50˚C) according to the chart below. Allow mixture to stand for one minute to absorb all the water. Remix, and feed at a temperature of 38-40˚C with a spoon, syringe or crop tube. Prepare food fresh each meal and thoroughly clean utensils between feeds.
Feed until the crop is comfortably full. As a general rule, this equates to about 10% of body weight per feed. Let the crop empty completely at least once a day by allowing an overnight fasting period.
Growth
Weigh chicks before feeding each day. On average chicks should gain from 5 -15% of their body weight per day, until they are well-feathered. Failure to gain weight could indicate disease, or mean that chicks are not getting enough food. Healthy chicks that are not gaining sufficient weight may need more frequent feeds, more volume at each feed or a higher proportion of powder in the mix. Feed and growth charts for various species are available under Hand-Rearing.
Weaning
Offer adult-type foods once chicks are fully feathered or start to resist being hand fed. Ideal weaning foods include Parrot Soft Food, Budgie Starter or Egg & Biscuit. Gradually reduce the frequency and volume of hand rearing food to encourage weaning. For long-term health, it is a good practice to wean young birds on to a balanced diet of Parrot Pellets/Crumbles. Initially offer moistened pellets/crumbles and once chicks start eating these, they can be fed dry. Chicks may naturally lose some weight during weaning (up to 15%), so it’s important to monitor food consumption and bird health in this period.

Passwell Red Factor Canary Seed
Vendor:PasswellRegular price From $19.99Regular priceUnit price / perDiet specially formulated to maintain bright feather colour in red canaries.
Key Features
- Keeps Canaries Red: Seed mix is fortified with the red carotenoid pigment canthaxanthin.
- Unique Infusion Process: Canthaxnthin is absorbed into the kernel of the seed, meaning it is readily consumed by the bird and available during feather growth.
- Simple & Effective: Providing canthaxanthin in the seed is more effective than dosing drinking water, as it is non-messy, reduces waste and ensures optimum intake.
Ingredients
Canary Seed, Hulled Oats, French White Millet, Japanese Millet, Canola, Linseed, Canthaxanthin (50mg/kg). Some seasonal variation in seed content and composition may occur.
Active Constituent
Canthaxanthin 50 mg/kg
Red Factor Canary Seed should be available to birds whenever they are growing new feathers. Supplementation only affects the colour of growing feathers, not existing ones, so colour change may not be seen until the next moult. It only affects canaries with red factor genetics.
During primary moult: (summer-autumn)
Feed as 100% of the seed component of the diet, just prior to and during feather moult.
Rest of the year
Feed as at least 50% of the usual seed diet. This will maintain sufficient levels of canthaxanthin in the bloodstream to account for any out-of-season moulting.
If feeding seed as the main diet, birds can become deficient in vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and amino acids, particularly when breeding. We recommend supplementing with Egg & Biscuit or Crumbles, which contain a balance of these essential nutrients. Also offer a range of fresh seeding grasses, leafy greens and finely diced vegetables.

Typical Analysis
Protein 13% Fat 6% Ash 3% Moisture 4% Energy (ME) 16 MJ/kg Directions
Feed dry, or mix with warm water to a desired consistency. Always ensure that fresh drinking water is available. Remove soiled or uneaten food daily. Captive birds are prone to over-eating, so feed according to body weight, based on the guidelines below.
These feed amounts may vary depending on daily temperature, bird activity level and the nutritional value of other foods eaten. Offer a variety of fruit, vegetables and as much native blossom as possible.
Breeding Lorikeets
Increase feed quantity by up to 50% and supplement with Parrot Soft Food or Finch Soft Food.
Wild Lorikeets
Ration daily feed to no more than 3g (⅓ scoop) per bird per day. Limit feeding frequency to reduce dependence on the food. Thoroughly clean feed containers between feeds. Transmission of disease and the presence of predators can be problems at feed stations. An alternative to feeding is to plant flowering native shrubs and provide fresh water.

Directions
Parrots need to modify their feeding technique to eat pellets. Initially they may disintegrate the food, but soon learn to consume the whole pellet, including any fine powder produced.
Direct Change to Pellets: Applies to companion pets and larger parrots. Initially remove all seed and treats and provide only pellets. If birds do not eat during the day, replace some of the seed before nightfall and try again the next day. If this is not successful, try gradually introducing pellets.
Introducing Pellets: For smaller parrots and difficult-to-convert birds. Start with a 50:50 mix of pellets and seed then slowly reduce the proportion of seed over a number of days.
Body weight and bird health should be closely monitored to ensure birds are consuming pellets.
Feeding Guide
What to feed with Parrot Pellets
Pellets are a balanced diet and can represent up to 80% of the total diet. Offer a range of fruit & vegetables, small amounts of treats (e.g. nuts) along with fresh seeding grasses or sprouted seed.
