Care Guidelines
Aquarium Setup:
A tank of at least 75 litres is ideal for a pair of Kribensis. They thrive in a planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots like caves and rocks. A soft, darker substrate complements their natural behavior of foraging at the bottom.
Water Parameters:
Maintain stable water conditions with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5 and a temperature range of 25°C to 30°C. Regular water changes and proper filtration ensure their health and well-being.
Diet:
Kribensis are not picky eaters and enjoy a mix of quality flake or pellet food, live or frozen treats such as brine shrimp or bloodworms, and vegetable options like zucchini. A varied diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration.
Behavior and Compatibility:
Kribensis are relatively peaceful but may exhibit territorial behavior, especially when breeding. They can coexist in community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Avoid long-finned tank mates to prevent fin nipping. Providing ample hiding spots helps reduce any territorial disputes.
Breeding Information
Kribensis are cave spawners and readily breed in captivity. Females develop a striking red or purple belly when ready to spawn. After eggs are laid, the female protects the nest while the male defends the surrounding area. The eggs hatch within a week, and the fry quickly become free-swimming. Providing small live foods supports their rapid growth.
