While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .

A perfect introduction to dwarf cichlids, the Kribensis is a peaceful, colourful, and hardy species that thrives in community and breeding setups alike. With vibrant hues of purple, yellow, and red—especially pronounced in females—Kribs are full of character and pair strongly with their mates when spawning. A joy to watch and easy to care for, they bring personality to any aquarium.
Species: Pelvicachromis pulcher
Common Names: Kribensis, Krib, Rainbow Krib
Origin: West Africa – rivers and streams in Nigeria and Cameroon
Light Requirements: Moderate
Diet: Omnivorous – enjoys flakes, sinking pellets, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and vegetable matter
Maximum Size: 7–9 cm
Temperament: Peaceful, mildly territorial when breeding
Care Level: Easy
Aquarium Setup:
Best kept in aquariums of 70 litres or more, Kribs thrive in well-decorated tanks with plenty of caves, driftwood, and plants. A soft sandy substrate is ideal for natural behaviour such as digging or sifting. They do well in pairs or small harems and benefit from subdued lighting and hiding places, especially when spawning.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (5–15 dGH)
Growth and Maintenance:
Kribs are fast-growing and hardy, living up to 5 years in stable conditions. Breeding pairs form strong bonds and become more territorial during spawning, often caring for their fry as a team. Males are slightly larger with pointed fins, while females are more colourful, especially during courtship.
Care Tips:
✔ Use caves or ceramic tubes for spawning sites
✔ Feed a varied diet to enhance colour and breeding condition
✔ Maintain consistent water quality and low aggression
✔ Monitor for territoriality during breeding periods
✔ Provide cover and sight breaks to reduce stress in community setups
Compatibility:
Suitable for peaceful community tanks with similar-sized fish such as tetras, Corydoras, rasboras, and rainbowfish. Avoid housing with aggressive cichlids or very timid species. Pairs can become protective during breeding—ensure tankmates have escape spaces.
Availability:
Regularly available in the Australian trade. Often sold as juveniles or sexed pairs. Ask us for current availability or ready-to-breed pairs.
Disclaimer:
Kribensis Cichlids may become territorial while protecting eggs or fry. Tank layout and stocking should account for their breeding behaviour if housed in community tanks.
