Care Guidelines
Aquarium Setup:
A tank of at least 150 litres is recommended for Auratus Cichlids due to their territorial nature. They thrive in a rocky aquascape that mimics their natural Lake Malawi habitat, with plenty of caves and crevices for hiding and establishing territories. Sand or fine gravel substrate complements their digging behavior.
Water Parameters:
Maintain a pH between 7.5 and 8.5 with a temperature range of 24°C to 28°C. Consistent water quality is vital, so regular water changes and robust filtration are essential.
Diet:
Auratus Cichlids are omnivores and benefit from a varied diet. Provide high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes along with vegetable-based foods like spirulina and blanched vegetables. Occasionally, offer live or frozen protein sources like brine shrimp or bloodworms, but avoid overfeeding protein to prevent digestive issues.
Behavior and Compatibility:
Auratus Cichlids are known for their aggressive and territorial behavior, particularly in smaller tanks or during breeding. They are best kept with other robust Mbuna species in a species-specific or African cichlid community tank. Overcrowding and abundant hiding spots can help diffuse aggression, but avoid mixing them with passive or smaller fish.
Breeding Information
Auratus Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders, with females carrying fertilized eggs and fry in their mouths for approximately three weeks. Breeding is relatively straightforward if water conditions are stable and the aquarium provides sufficient hiding spaces. After the fry are released, feed them with finely crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp to promote healthy growth.
