Care Guidelines
Aquarium Setup:
A spacious tank of at least 100 liters is recommended for Amapá Red-Backed Angelfish, as they can grow to a moderate size and appreciate having plenty of swimming space. Include plants, driftwood, and rocks to create hiding spots, but leave open areas for the angelfish to swim. Soft substrates such as sand or fine gravel are ideal. These fish can be sensitive to poor water quality, so a strong filtration system is essential.
Water Parameters:
Maintain a stable pH range of 6.0 to 7.5, with a water temperature between 24°C and 30°C. Regular water changes and good filtration are important to keep the water quality high, as angelfish are sensitive to toxins.
Diet:
Amapá Red-Backed Angelfish are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet. Feed them high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They will also graze on plants, so providing soft-leaved plants in the aquarium can offer additional food sources and enrichment.
Behavior and Compatibility:
Amapá Red-Backed Angelfish are peaceful but can be territorial during breeding, especially when guarding eggs. They do best in a community tank with other peaceful species. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive fish or smaller species that could be stressed by their presence. They are compatible with other peaceful mid-to-upper swimming fish such as tetras, rasboras, and gouramis.
Breeding Information
Breeding Amapá Red-Backed Angelfish in captivity is achievable if the right conditions are provided. They form strong pair bonds, and once a pair is established, they will lay eggs on a flat surface, such as a leaf or rock. The male fertilizes the eggs, and both parents guard them diligently. The eggs will hatch in 2–3 days, and the fry can be fed with infusoria or finely crushed flakes until they are large enough to accept regular foods.
