Care Guidelines
Aquarium Setup:
The Amazon Sword thrives in a tank with a nutrient-rich substrate, such as a mix of fine gravel or sand with added plant nutrients. It is best placed in the mid-to-background of the aquarium, as it can grow quite large, especially with the right conditions. Moderate to high lighting is ideal, though the plant can adapt to a variety of light levels. Regular trimming will help maintain its shape and prevent overcrowding in the tank.
Water Parameters:
Maintain a pH range between 6.5 and 7.5, with a water temperature between 22°C and 28°C. Amazon Swords prefer stable water conditions, and regular water changes are important to keep them healthy. They can tolerate a wide range of water hardness, but softer water with good filtration will produce the best results.
Diet:
As a rooted plant, the Amazon Sword absorbs nutrients directly from the substrate, so using a nutrient-rich substrate or adding root tabs is beneficial. It can also benefit from liquid fertilizers to provide essential nutrients like iron and potassium, especially if the tank lacks these in the water.
Growth and Maintenance:
The Amazon Sword grows at a moderate rate and can reach heights of 30–40 cm under the right conditions. It has long, broad leaves that give the tank a lush, natural look. To maintain its health, regularly trim any dead or damaged leaves. The plant may also send out runners, which can be separated and replanted to propagate new plants.
Compatibility:
Amazon Sword plants are well-suited for community tanks with peaceful to moderately active fish, including tetras, guppies, and cichlids. They provide hiding spots and oxygenation, benefiting the overall health of the aquarium. Because they can grow quite large, avoid placing them in tanks with overly aggressive fish or those that may uproot the plant.
