The Rosy Barb originates from northern India, specifically Bangal and Assam, and can be found in diverse habitats, ranging from flowing hill streams and tributaries to calm waters such as lakes, ponds, and swamps. This species, recognized for its captivating beauty, exhibits a silvery or coppery-pink hue with a greenish tint along the back. Males showcase more prominent pink coloring on their underbellies. Hardy, undemanding, and endlessly active, these fish are a delight to observe, making them an ideal choice for novice aquarists. In aquariums, Rosy Barbs typically attain a size of around 10 cm. Their lively nature also makes them adept jumpers, necessitating a covered aquarium. When kept in a group, males engage in fascinating behavior, constantly swimming around each other with their fins extended to display their vibrant colors. These prolific breeders require a breeding tank with shallow water.
The Rosy Barb proves to be a valuable addition to most tanks and an excellent selection for beginners in the realm of aquarium keeping. Adapting well to changes in water conditions and displaying robust appetites, these fish prefer cooler aquariums, warranting caution in selecting compatible tankmates.
Due to their tendency to nip at the fins of slow-swimming and long-finned fish, they thrive in the company of active companions. Being omnivorous, Rosy Barbs thrive on a varied diet, encompassing live, fresh, and flake foods. Maintaining a balanced nutrition, provide high-quality flake food daily and supplement with treats like live or frozen brine shrimp and blood worms. Enhance their appearance with color foods for optimal results.
Feed once a day with an amount they can consume in about 5 minutes, or multiple times a day with portions they can finish in 3 minutes or less at each feeding.
