The Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii) is a true showstopper in the marine aquarium world. Known for its dramatic sail-like dorsal fin, bold vertical striping, and intricate spotted patterns, this tang brings both elegance and personality to any large saltwater setup. As it matures, its colours intensify and patterns become even more intricate, making it a standout centrepiece fish. Active, intelligent, and herbivorous by nature, it’s best kept in spacious, mature aquariums with room to roam and graze.

Availability:
Regularly available in the Australian marine aquarium trade, especially through specialist suppliers. Juveniles are more commonly seen in stores, with adults occasionally available upon request. Ask us about current stock, transport options, and suitable tankmates.

Disclaimer:
"Due to natural variation and age, individual colouration and size may differ from reference images. Juvenile and adult patterns vary significantly."

Species: Zebrasoma desjardinii
Common Names: Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang, Desjardinii Tang, Red Sea Sailfin Tang
Origin: Indian Ocean – including the Red Sea, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and East African coast
Light Requirements: Moderate to high – brings out full colouration
Diet: Herbivorous – feeds on marine algae, nori, spirulina, and herbivore pellets; will accept some meaty foods but thrives on a plant-heavy diet
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm in the wild; typically 30–35 cm in captivity
Temperament: Semi-aggressive (particularly with similar-shaped tangs)
Care Level: Advanced

Aquarium Setup:
This species requires a minimum tank size of 500 litres, with long stretches of open swimming space and plenty of live rock for grazing. A high-flow, oxygen-rich environment with strong filtration is essential, as Sailfin Tangs are active and produce a fair bio-load. While reef-safe with corals and invertebrates, they may become territorial if space is limited—especially with other tangs or surgeonfish. A secure lid is recommended, as they may spook and dash.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

Growth and Maintenance:
The Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang grows quickly and can live 10–15+ years with excellent care. Juveniles may appear slightly duller but develop incredible contrast and vibrancy as they mature. These fish are prone to marine ich and lateral line erosion if kept in poor conditions, so water quality, diet, and space are critical. Offer multiple algae-based feedings daily and consider using a UV steriliser for parasite control in high-value systems.

Care Tips:
✔ Tank Size: 500 L minimum, larger preferred for adults
✔ Feeding: Offer marine algae and seaweed 2–3 times daily
✔ Tankmates: Avoid other Zebrasoma or similarly shaped tangs unless in very large systems
✔ Décor: Live rock for grazing and open zones for swimming
✔ Handling: Use a container or soft net; be mindful of sharp scalpel at the tail base

Compatibility:
Best kept with peaceful to moderately assertive species. Compatible with wrasses, clownfish, anthias, gobies, and most reef-safe fish. May show aggression to new tangs or similar-shaped species (especially other Zebrasoma, Acanthurus, or Naso species). Ideal for large reef tanks or fish-only systems with suitable space.
