While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .

Velvety brown and full of character, the Chocolate Oranda is a striking variety of fancy goldfish, beloved for its rich, cocoa-coloured body and signature raspberry-like head growth (wen). With a peaceful nature and flowing fins, this goldfish is a favourite for both beginners and collectors looking for beauty and charm in equal measure. Their calm presence and unique appearance make them true aquatic royalty.
Species: Carassius auratus (Oranda variant)
Common Names: Chocolate Oranda, Brown Oranda, Fancy Goldfish
Origin: Selectively bred in China and Japan; now bred worldwide, including Australia
Light Requirements: Moderate – brings out the best in their deep brown tones
Diet: Omnivorous – high-quality goldfish pellets, gel foods, vegetables (zucchini, spinach, peas), and occasional protein (bloodworms, brine shrimp)
Maximum Size: 15–20 cm
Temperament: Peaceful
Care Level: Beginner to intermediate
Aquarium Setup:
Chocolate Orandas thrive in coldwater or temperate freshwater aquariums of 80 litres and up, with gentle flow, smooth substrate, and plenty of room to swim. Due to their wen and rounded bodies, they’re slower swimmers and should be kept with other fancy goldfish rather than faster, slimmer types. Avoid sharp décor—Orandas are prone to bumping their head growth.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 18–24°C
pH: 7.0–8.0
Hardness: 5–15 dGH
Growth and Maintenance:
The wen (head growth) develops over time and needs to be monitored for excess growth or infection. Regular water changes, high oxygen levels, and a balanced diet are key to keeping your Oranda healthy. Chocolate colouring may darken or lighten with age, diet, and lighting. They can live for over a decade with proper care.
Care Tips:
✔ Avoid gravel or décor with sharp edges – delicate fins and wen can tear
✔ Feed sinking pellets to avoid gulping air
✔ Ensure good water quality and stable parameters
✔ Provide space – Orandas need room to turn and swim freely
✔ Keep with other slow, fancy goldfish varieties
Compatibility:
Best kept with other fancy goldfish such as Ryukin, Pearlscale, Ranchu, or other Orandas. Avoid fast or fin-nipping tankmates. Not suitable for tropical or aggressive fish.
Availability:
Chocolate Orandas are available through select Australian breeders and specialty aquatics retailers. Ask us about current stock, sizing, and care recommendations.
Disclaimer:
"Colour intensity may vary depending on lighting, diet, and age. As with all fancy goldfish, avoid sharp décor and monitor wen growth regularly."
