While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.

Striking, bold, and full of personality, the Diana’s Hogfish (Bodianus diana) is a show-stopping wrasse species recognised for its contrasting colours and lively behaviour. Juveniles are especially eye-catching, displaying a deep maroon body patterned with irregular white blotches and fine yellow spotting. As they mature, their colours soften but remain striking, making them a popular choice for larger marine aquariums.
These hogfish are active swimmers and natural hunters, often seen foraging among rocks and sand for small crustaceans. While hardy and adaptable, they can be assertive, so they’re best suited to tanks with robust tankmates and plenty of space.
Species: Bodianus diana
Common Names: Diana’s Hogfish, Red Diana Wrasse
Origin: Indo-Pacific – from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Maldives and Sri Lanka
Light Requirements: Moderate to high – thrives in standard reef lighting
Diet: Carnivorous – feeds on crustaceans, molluscs, worms, and meaty frozen foods such as mysis, krill, clam, and shrimp
Maximum Size: 25–30 cm
Temperament: Semi-aggressive – bold, predatory tendencies toward small invertebrates
Care Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Aquarium Setup:
Requires a marine aquarium of at least 500 litres with plenty of live rock for foraging, open swimming space, and secure rockwork (they can wedge themselves into crevices when resting). Not reef-safe with ornamental shrimp, crabs, or small snails, though usually fine with corals. A tight-fitting lid is essential as they may jump.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.020–1.025
Hardness: 8–12 dKH
Growth and Maintenance:
Diana’s Hogfish grow large and require strong filtration and excellent water quality. They are hardy once established but should be given a varied diet rich in meaty foods to maintain colour and health. Juveniles adapt more easily to captivity, while adults may be more aggressive.
Care Tips:
✔ Provide a meaty, varied diet to mimic natural feeding
✔ Avoid housing with small invertebrates you wish to keep
✔ Best suited to large fish-only or predator community tanks
✔ Ensure rock structures are secure for hiding behaviour
✔ Use a tight-fitting lid to prevent jumping
Compatibility:
Compatible with large, robust fish such as tangs, angelfish, groupers, and triggers. Will prey on shrimp, crabs, and smaller invertebrates, making them unsuitable for reef tanks with delicate invert populations.
Availability:
Occasionally available in the Australian trade, usually sold as juveniles due to their brighter colouration. Larger adults are less common and may command higher prices.
