Tiny, bold, and endlessly charming, the Five-lined Coral Goby (Gobiodon quinquestrigatus) is a colourful nano fish that makes its home among branching SPS corals like Acropora. With a lime green body marked by five vivid blue horizontal lines, this species adds a splash of personality and function to any peaceful reef tank.
Despite their small size, they’re known for their inquisitive nature and territorial sass. These gobies form strong bonds with coral hosts, even assisting in cleaning and protecting their home coral from pests.
Species: Gobiodon quinquestrigatus
Common Names: Five-lined Coral Goby, Five-stripe Goby
Origin: Indo-Pacific – Common around coral-rich reefs from the Great Barrier Reef to the western Pacific
Light Requirements: Moderate to high – thrives in well-lit reef tanks with Acropora and other SPS
Diet: Carnivorous – Accepts frozen foods, enriched brine shrimp, mysis, and finely chopped marine fare
Maximum Size: 3.5–4.5 cm
Temperament: Bold but reef-safe; territorial with similar-sized gobies
Care Level: Intermediate
Aquarium Setup:
Best housed in mature reef aquariums of 30 litres or more with plenty of live rock and branching corals. These gobies are coral perchers, so branching SPS like Acropora is ideal—not just for aesthetics, but for their mental and physical health. Gentle to moderate flow and stable water parameters are key, and they don’t appreciate boisterous tankmates or frequent disruptions.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.024–1.026
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Growth and Maintenance:
Five-lined Coral Gobies are resilient and low-maintenance once acclimated. They may nip at coral polyps early on but typically settle down once bonded with a coral. Their commensal behaviour can even benefit Acropora health. Males and females can be kept together, though multiple males may squabble in small tanks.
Care Tips:
✔ House with SPS corals for best behaviour and natural hosting
✔ Avoid keeping with larger, aggressive species
✔ Offer a varied diet of small frozen marine foods
✔ Keep water parameters stable—sensitive to swings
✔ Provide ample hiding spaces to reduce stress
Compatibility:
Great for peaceful reef aquariums. Compatible with shrimp, smaller wrasses, clowns, and other nano reef inhabitants. Avoid dottybacks, large wrasses, or aggressive gobies.
Availability:
Occasionally available in the Australian marine trade, usually as captive-sourced or sustainably wild-collected specimens. Best housed in SPS-dominated reef tanks.
