Hornwort is a fast-growing, hardy aquatic plant prized for its versatility, low maintenance, and ability to thrive in a wide range of freshwater conditions. With its feathery, needle-like foliage and vibrant green colour, Hornwort provides excellent cover for fish and fry, helps oxygenate the water, and competes with algae by absorbing excess nutrients. It can be floated or anchored, making it a perfect addition to aquariums and ponds alike.
Scientific Name: Ceratophyllum demersum
Common Name: Hornwort
Origin: Cosmopolitan – found on every continent except Antarctica
Growth Rate: Fast
Light Requirements: Low to high
CO₂ Requirement: Not required, but will boost growth

Hornwort is ideal for beginners due to its adaptability and hardiness. It does not root, instead absorbing nutrients directly from the water column. Its dense foliage offers natural refuge for shrimp, fry, and small fish, while improving water quality by reducing nitrates.
Aquarium & Pond Use:
Perfect for low-tech tanks, breeding setups, and outdoor ponds. It provides shade and reduces algae by blocking light and utilising excess nutrients. Avoid strong flow that may cause needle drop. Trimming is easy—just snip off a section and replant or float.
Propagation:
Simple to propagate by cutting healthy stems and allowing them to float or anchor. Each cutting can grow into a new plant.
Care Tips:
✔ Great for algae control and natural filtration
✔ Regular trimming helps maintain shape and prevent overgrowth
✔ Float freely or weigh down with plant anchors
✔ Rinse well before adding to prevent detritus introduction
Availability:
Commonly available and often sold by the bunch. Grows quickly once established in the tank.
