While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .
Our friendly team will be happy to assist and provide the most up-to-date information on current stock.
A striking standout among bottom-dwellers, the L333 Pleco (Hypancistrus sp. “L333”)—also known as the King Tiger Pleco—boasts bold zebra-like striping and a calm, cryptic nature. This stunning Loricariid is highly prized for its compact size, unique patterning, and peaceful disposition. Native to the Rio Xingu in Brazil, this species thrives in warm, well-oxygenated aquariums and is a favourite among aquascapers and pleco enthusiasts alike.
Species: Hypancistrus sp. “L333”
Common Names: L333 Pleco, King Tiger Pleco, Zebra King Pleco
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
Light Requirements: Low to moderate – prefers shaded areas and subdued lighting
Diet: Omnivorous – prefers protein-rich foods like sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional veg (zucchini, cucumber, algae wafers)
Maximum Size: 13–15 cm
Temperament: Peaceful and shy
Care Level: Intermediate
Aquarium Setup:
L333s thrive in tropical freshwater aquariums of at least 100 litres, with excellent filtration, moderate current, and plenty of caves or driftwood to hide in. Mimicking their native blackwater river environment with soft substrate, shaded areas, and scattered leaf litter helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour. They are generally nocturnal but will venture out more with time and a peaceful environment.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 27–30°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (3–10 dGH)
Growth and Maintenance:
This species grows slowly and typically reaches maturity around 2–3 years of age. A stable, warm, and oxygen-rich environment is key for long-term success. While peaceful, they are territorial with other bottom-dwellers, so provide multiple hiding spots if keeping more than one. Regular water changes and low nitrates are essential, especially in warmer tanks.
Care Tips:
✔ Feed after lights out to suit nocturnal habits
✔ Provide multiple caves and shaded areas for comfort
✔ Maintain strong filtration and high oxygenation
✔ Avoid mixing with aggressive bottom-dwellers or large cichlids
✔ Sand or smooth substrate helps protect their delicate undersides
Compatibility:
Perfect for peaceful community tanks. Pairs well with small tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, and other non-aggressive species. May become territorial with other plecos, especially in tight quarters.
Availability:
Available through Australian breeders and specialist suppliers. Locally bred L333s tend to be hardier and more adaptable to home aquariums. Ask us about current stock, sexed pairs, or breeding groups.
Disclaimer:
"Due to their shy nature and specific temperature needs, the L333 Pleco is best kept in stable, well-maintained tropical aquariums with suitable hiding spots and minimal competition for space."
