With their striking white-spotted pattern and friendly shoaling behaviour, the Sterbai Corydoras (Corydoras sterbai) is a favourite among aquarists. Known for their peaceful nature and constant activity at the bottom of the tank, these hardy little catfish make excellent community residents and thrive in planted aquariums. Their distinctive orange pectoral fins paired with dark bodies and pale spots make them one of the most eye-catching cory species.

Species: Corydoras sterbai
Common Names: Sterbai Cory, Sterba’s Corydoras
Origin: South America – native to the Rio Guaporé region in Brazil and Bolivia

Light Requirements: Low to moderate – prefers subdued or filtered lighting
Diet: Omnivorous – sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable-based foods
Maximum Size: 6–7 cm
Temperament: Very peaceful, social, and best kept in groups of 6+
Care Level: Easy

Aquarium Setup:
Sterbai Corys are bottom dwellers that do best in aquariums of 80 litres or more with a soft sand substrate to protect their sensitive barbels. Provide driftwood, plants, and shaded areas for cover while leaving open space for schooling. Gentle water flow and high oxygenation replicate their natural environment.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 2–15 dGH

Growth and Maintenance:
These corys are hardy and active, constantly sifting through the substrate for food. Regular feeding with quality sinking foods ensures health and longevity. They are sensitive to poor substrate choices—avoid sharp gravel, which can damage their barbels. Maintain excellent water quality with consistent cleaning and water changes.

Care Tips:
✔ Always keep in groups for natural behaviour and wellbeing
✔ Use sand or fine gravel to protect delicate barbels
✔ Supplement diet with protein-rich frozen/live foods
✔ Provide shaded areas with driftwood and plants
✔ Keep water well-oxygenated

Compatibility:
An excellent choice for peaceful community aquariums. Compatible with tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, gouramis, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid large predatory fish.

Availability:
Commonly available across Australia due to their popularity and hardy nature. Often sold at 3–4 cm juveniles that grow quickly in the right conditions.

Disclaimer:
As a live animal, appearance may vary depending on age, sex, and size. Colouration and markings often become more vivid as the fish matures.
