While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .

Graceful, vibrant, and undeniably eye-catching, the Decorated Firefish (Nemateleotris decora) is a peaceful reef fish loved for its slender body, flowing fins, and ethereal gradient of lavender, white, and golden hues. Often hovering just above the substrate with an alert posture and twitching dorsal fin, this species brings both beauty and personality to any peaceful marine aquarium.
Species: Nemateleotris decora
Common Names: Decorated Firefish, Purple Firefish, Elegant Fire Goby
Origin: Indo-Pacific – from East Africa to the Western Pacific, including the Great Barrier Reef
Light Requirements: Moderate
Diet: Carnivorous – thrives on a varied diet of finely chopped marine meats (mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, copepods), frozen blends, and quality micro pellets
Maximum Size: 9–10 cm
Temperament: Peaceful
Care Level: Easy
Aquarium Setup:
Best kept in a marine aquarium of at least 80 litres, the Decorated Firefish prefers a peaceful environment with plenty of hiding spaces such as caves or rock crevices, and open sandy areas for hovering. Due to their shy nature and tendency to dart when startled, a tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent escape. These fish are generally reef-safe and make excellent additions to nano and full-size reef systems alike.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Growth and Maintenance:
Firefish are relatively low-maintenance once established. Provide high-quality water conditions, and feed small, frequent meals to maintain health and vibrant colouration. They do well singly or as mated pairs but may fight with conspecifics if space is limited. Expect them to hide more in the first few weeks but become increasingly bold over time.
Care Tips:
✔ Use a secure lid – they jump when startled
✔ Feed small portions 2–3 times daily
✔ Provide low-aggression tankmates to reduce stress
✔ Avoid housing with other firefish unless paired
✔ Maintain stable water conditions to prevent reclusive behaviour
Compatibility:
Excellent for peaceful reef tanks. Pairs well with gobies, clownfish, wrasses, blennies, chromis, and shrimp. Avoid aggressive or boisterous fish such as large angels or triggers.
Availability:
Commonly available in the Australian marine trade. Look for individuals with bold colour and alert posture. Pairs may be available by request—ask us for current stock and tankmate suggestions.
Disclaimer:
"Jumping is common in this species—ensure aquarium lids are secure. Colouration may vary slightly between individuals and lighting conditions."
