While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.

A dazzling open-water swimmer with attitude to match, the Redtooth Triggerfish (Odonus niger) is a charismatic addition to larger marine systems. Named for its unique crimson teeth and brilliant blue-green body, this Indo-Pacific native is known for its graceful, darting movement, strong personality, and ever-watchful eyes. While relatively peaceful for a triggerfish, this species still packs some spunk—making it best suited for experienced marine aquarists with the space to match its bold behaviour.
Species: Odonus niger
Common Names: Redtooth Triggerfish, Niger Triggerfish, Blue Trigger
Origin: Indo-Pacific – coral reefs from the Maldives to the Great Barrier Reef
Light Requirements: Moderate
Diet: Carnivorous – thrives on a varied diet of meaty foods including shrimp, squid, krill, mussel, clam, marine pellets, and enriched frozen blends
Maximum Size: Up to 50 cm in the wild; 25–30 cm typical in captivity
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced
Aquarium Setup:
Redtooth Triggers require a marine aquarium of at least 450–600 litres, with strong filtration, open swimming space, and secure rockwork for hiding and sleeping. They are very active swimmers, often gliding midwater with their undulating dorsal and anal fins. Though less aggressive than many other triggers, they may nip tank mates or rearrange décor. Not reef-safe—these fish may harass ornamental shrimp, small fish, and invertebrates.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Growth and Maintenance:
Redtooth Triggers grow steadily and can live for over a decade with proper care. They are hardy once established but need consistent feeding and pristine water quality. Their teeth grow continuously, so crunchy foods like shelled shrimp or crab legs help with natural wear. Use a secure lid—these fish are known jumpers.
Care Tips:
✔ Feed a varied, protein-rich diet 2–3 times daily
✔ Provide open swimming zones and sturdy rock structures
✔ Not suitable for reef tanks—may nip or eat inverts and corals
✔ Handle with care—adults can become territorial and may bite
✔ Ensure tankmates are robust and semi-aggressive
Compatibility:
Best housed with other semi-aggressive or bold marine species like tangs, large wrasses, angelfish, groupers, or other triggerfish. Avoid timid fish, small invertebrates, and reef-dwellers. While juveniles may appear shy, adults can become dominant and territorial over time.
Availability:
Occasionally available in the Australian marine trade. Juveniles are more common and adapt well to captive life. Ask us about current sizing and compatibility options for your existing system.
Disclaimer:
"Due to individual temperament, compatibility with other species may vary. Not reef-safe. Adult fish may become territorial and require more space as they grow."
