While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .
Our friendly team will be happy to assist and provide the most up-to-date information on current stock.
The Sucking Catfish (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri), also known as the Chinese Algae Eater, is a hardy freshwater fish often chosen for its algae-cleaning ability. Unlike plecos, this species has a specialised sucker-like mouth adapted for clinging to smooth surfaces and rasping algae. While helpful in young aquariums, they grow into strong, territorial fish and are best suited for medium to large community tanks with fast-moving companions.
Species: Gyrinocheilus aymonieri
Common Names: Sucking Catfish, Chinese Algae Eater, Siamese Algae Eater (not to be confused with Crossocheilus oblongus)
Origin: Southeast Asia – Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam in fast-flowing rivers and floodplains
Light Requirements: Moderate (encourages natural algae growth)
Diet: Omnivorous – feeds on algae, sinking wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, cucumber), and small invertebrates as they mature
Maximum Size: 25–30 cm
Temperament: Peaceful when young; semi-aggressive as adults, particularly toward slow or flat-bodied fish
Care Level: Moderate
Aquarium Setup:
A tank of at least 200 litres is recommended to house adults comfortably. Provide smooth rocks, driftwood, and strong water movement to replicate their natural river habitats. They are active swimmers and appreciate open areas alongside shaded resting spots. Sand or fine gravel substrate is ideal, and ensure strong filtration to handle their high activity levels.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 23–28°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 5–12 dGH
Growth and Maintenance:
Juveniles actively graze on algae and are popular for cleaning tanks. However, as they mature, their diet broadens, and they may stop eating algae exclusively. Adult sucking catfish are more territorial and can harass slow-moving fish, so tankmate choice becomes increasingly important. They can live for 10+ years when cared for properly.
Care Tips:
✔ Keep in larger tanks to reduce aggression
✔ Provide strong currents and plenty of swimming space
✔ Supplement diet with wafers and vegetables—don’t rely solely on algae
✔ Avoid housing with very slow or long-finned species
✔ Cover the tank securely—they can be strong jumpers
Compatibility:
Juveniles mix well with peaceful community fish such as danios, rasboras, barbs, and larger tetras. Adults are better suited to semi-aggressive or fast-moving tankmates. Avoid keeping them with angelfish, gouramis, or bettas.
Availability:
Commonly available in aquarium stores across Australia, often sold as juveniles for algae control. Buyers should be aware of their large adult size and changing behaviour.
Disclaimer:
As a live animal, colour, size, and temperament may vary depending on age and conditions. Juveniles are often sold at 5–7 cm and may differ greatly from adult appearance and behaviour.
