Vibrant, fast-moving, and full of attitude, the Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus) is a true showstopper in any large marine aquarium. With its electric blue and yellow horizontal stripes, streamlined body, and constant motion, this Indo-Pacific surgeonfish demands attention—and space. Known for its territorial temperament and high activity level, the Clown Tang is best suited to advanced aquarists ready to provide the space and care it needs to thrive.
Species: Acanthurus lineatus
Common Names: Clown Tang, Lined Surgeonfish, Striped Surgeonfish
Origin: Indo-Pacific – reefs from East Africa to Fiji, including the Great Barrier Reef
Light Requirements: Moderate to high – reef lighting suitable
Diet: Herbivorous – primarily marine algae, seaweed (nori), spirulina; will accept quality pellets and frozen herbivore blends
Maximum Size: Up to 38 cm in the wild; 25–30 cm common in captivity
Temperament: Aggressive/territorial, especially toward other tangs
Care Level: Advanced
Aquarium Setup:
This species requires a large, mature marine system of at least 700–900 litres, with ample swimming space and strong, stable water flow. It thrives in reef-style environments with abundant live rock for grazing and shelter. Due to its territorial nature, it is best kept singly or with non-competing tankmates. Avoid housing with other Acanthurus species or similar-shaped tangs unless in very large systems.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Growth and Maintenance:
Clown Tangs are strong swimmers and need open water and excellent water quality to thrive. They're prone to ich and lateral line disease if stressed or underfed. Offer daily access to algae and seaweed to meet their high metabolic needs. Handle with caution—they possess sharp caudal spines near the tail used for defence.
Care Tips:
✔ Feed algae-rich diet multiple times daily
✔ Provide plenty of live rock for grazing
✔ Avoid keeping with other tangs unless in massive systems
✔ Quarantine new additions to prevent disease introduction
✔ Ensure highly oxygenated water and strong flow
Compatibility:
Best housed with large, semi-aggressive fish such as angels, wrasses, or groupers. Avoid small, timid tankmates and other surgeonfish. Not recommended for peaceful community tanks or reef tanks with delicate inverts or coral-polyp grazers nearby.
Availability:
Clown Tangs are occasionally available through the Australian marine trade. Due to their size and specific care requirements, availability may be limited. Contact us for current stock and transport arrangements.
Disclaimer:
"As a large and active species, the Clown Tang is not suitable for small or new marine systems. Ensure adequate swimming space, stable water parameters, and a strong feeding routine."
