A tiny fish with a massive attitude, the Blue Devil Damselfish (Chrysiptera cyanea) lives up to its name with electrifying blue colour and a territorial streak that makes it a bold presence in any marine aquarium. Though small in size, this Indo-Pacific native is feisty, hardy, and ideal for hobbyists seeking a low-maintenance fish with maximum visual impact. Its sapphire-blue body often features subtle yellow highlights near the tail or belly, especially in females or regional variants.

Availability:
Readily available in the Australian marine aquarium trade. Juveniles are often more peaceful and easier to integrate. Ask us about current stock and availability of male-female pairs or individuals.

Species: Chrysiptera cyanea
Common Names: Blue Devil Damselfish, Sapphire Devil, Blue Damselfish
Origin: Indo-Pacific – reefs from Indonesia and the Philippines to northern Australia
Light Requirements: Moderate to high – intense lighting enhances colouration
Diet: Omnivorous – consumes quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis and brine shrimp, and marine algae
Maximum Size: Up to 8 cm
Temperament: Aggressive – especially in smaller tanks
Care Level: Easy

Aquarium Setup:
Best housed in tanks of 100 litres or more, the Blue Devil requires rockwork and hiding places to break up sightlines and reduce aggression. While hardy and tolerant of a range of conditions, it can become dominant in confined spaces, so careful consideration of tankmates and territory is essential. They can be housed singly, as a male-female pair, or as part of a group in large aquariums (300 L+), though squabbling is common if space is limited.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

Growth and Maintenance:
The Blue Devil is known for its resilience, making it a top pick for new marine aquarists. However, its temperament requires careful management, particularly as it matures. With proper care and a stable environment, this species can live up to 6–8 years in captivity. Provide a varied diet and maintain high water quality for best health and colouration.

Care Tips:
✔ Territory: Provide rock caves and structure to reduce aggression
✔ Feeding: Mix of protein and algae-based foods for balanced nutrition
✔ Tankmates: Best with assertive or fast-moving fish – avoid shy species
✔ Grouping: Only keep multiples in large tanks with plenty of space
✔ Maintenance: Regular water changes and nutrient control recommended

Compatibility:
Suitable for semi-aggressive community tanks with species like wrasses, tangs, larger clownfish, and dottybacks. Avoid housing with peaceful or timid fish such as firefish, gobies, or cardinalfish. Reef-safe – will not harm corals or invertebrates, but can chase smaller or slower tankmates.
