Low-growing, charming, and truly Aussie, Marsilea drummondii—commonly known as Common Nardoo—is a creeping, clover-leaved aquatic plant native to Australia’s freshwater wetlands. Often mistaken for a terrestrial plant due to its four-leaf clover appearance, this amphibious species makes a fantastic, slow-spreading carpet in aquariums or emersed setups. Hardy and adaptable, it’s an ideal choice for natural-style aquascapes and paludariums where native flora is celebrated.

Availability:
Occasionally available in the Australian aquarium trade, often through native plant or biotope-focused suppliers. Usually sold as rhizome portions, potted clumps, or tissue culture. Ask us about stock availability or pre-order options for native biotope layouts.

Disclaimer:
"Appearance and growth rate may vary depending on lighting, water quality, and planting conditions. May require an adjustment period after planting."

Species: Marsilea drummondii
Common Names: Common Nardoo, Nardoo, Water Clover
Origin: Australia – widespread across freshwater floodplains, billabongs, and river margins
Light Requirements: Low to moderate – tolerates shade but responds to bright light
CO₂ Requirements: Optional – grows slowly without but responds positively with supplementation
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate
Maximum Height: 2–10 cm submerged (up to 15 cm emersed)
Placement: Foreground or shallow emersed zones

Aquarium Setup:
Marsilea drummondii is ideal for low-tech to high-tech aquariums and is especially popular in Australian biotope setups. It prefers fine-grain, nutrient-rich substrate and grows best in stable tanks with gentle flow and moderate lighting. It can be used submerged for a soft, clover-like carpet or allowed to grow emersed in shallow water or paludarium edges, where it takes on a more upright form.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 18–26°C
pH: 6.0–7.8
Hardness: 3–15 dGH

Growth and Maintenance:
Growth is generally slow and creeping, forming runners that gradually spread across the substrate. Regular trimming and replanting of runners help shape coverage. It adapts well to submerged and emersed conditions but may take time to adjust when transitioning. A steady supply of root fertilisers or a nutrient-rich base is recommended for long-term health.

Care Tips:
✔ Lighting: Moderate light encourages compact leaf growth
✔ CO₂: Optional but helps promote spread and vitality
✔ Trimming: Clip runners to shape or control spread
✔ Substrate: Nutrient-rich soil or sand with root tabs ideal
✔ Adaptability: Can grow submerged, emersed, or in seasonal setups

Compatibility:
Safe for all peaceful freshwater species. Ideal for tanks with shrimp, nano fish, Corydoras, and small tetras. Its soft structure provides excellent cover for fry and invertebrates. Avoid with large herbivorous fish like goldfish or plant-ripping cichlids.
