Tough, tall, and strikingly structural, Nomaphila stricta is a hardy stem plant that brings upright form and subtle texture to midground and background zones. With long, narrow leaves and a growth habit similar to Hygrophila, this Southeast Asian native is ideal for aquarists looking for a no-fuss plant that can handle a wide range of conditions. Often overlooked, Nomaphila stricta offers excellent vertical height and a graceful look that complements bushy or carpeted layouts.

Availability:
Occasionally available in the Australian aquarium trade. Often sold in bunches or cuttings. Ask us about availability or suitable companion plants to build your scape.

Disclaimer:
"Due to tank conditions and trimming frequency, plant height and leaf density may vary. Best results achieved with regular maintenance and moderate lighting."

Species: Nomaphila stricta
Common Names: Stricta, Nomaphila, Dwarf Temple Plant (sometimes used interchangeably)
Origin: Southeast Asia – commonly found in slow-moving rivers and wetlands
Light Requirements: Low to moderate – tolerates shade but grows best in bright conditions
CO₂ Requirements: Optional – benefits from CO₂ but grows well without
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
Maximum Height: 30–50 cm
Placement: Midground to background

Aquarium Setup:
Nomaphila stricta performs well in planted tanks of 50 litres or more, with soft to moderately hard water. It’s adaptable to different substrates, though it appreciates a nutrient-rich base or regular root tabs. Its long, lance-shaped leaves grow in opposite pairs along a thick stem, adding vertical rhythm to planted aquascapes. While it may not offer the same flair as red plants or fine-leaved species, its reliability and ease of care make it a valuable addition.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–28°C
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: 4–12 dGH

Growth and Maintenance:
This plant grows upright and steadily, requiring trimming once it reaches the surface. Trimmed tops can be replanted to propagate. The lower portions may lose leaves over time if shaded, so regular replanting or grouping with other background plants is recommended. With consistent care, it creates a graceful curtain of foliage that serves as a soft barrier or background frame.

Care Tips:
✔ Lighting: Moderate lighting keeps growth compact and healthy
✔ CO₂: Optional – helps with density and deeper green hues
✔ Trimming: Top regularly to prevent legginess and encourage bushiness
✔ Substrate: Enriched substrate or root tabs recommended for long-term health
✔ Flow: Gentle to moderate flow preferred

Compatibility:
Safe with all peaceful freshwater species, including shrimp, tetras, rasboras, and gouramis. Avoid with large, plant-damaging fish. Pairs well with carpeting plants or bushy stems for contrast in form and height.
