While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .

Subtle, elegant, and full of contrast, the Yellowtail Damselfish (Neopomacentrus nemurus) stands out with its dusky silver body and luminous yellow tail. A peaceful alternative to some of its more combative cousins, this damselfish brings a splash of vibrancy and constant motion to the mid-water column. Ideal for both beginner and advanced reef keepers, N. nemurus is an adaptable species that adds understated beauty and harmony to the home marine aquarium.
Species: Neopomacentrus nemurus
Common Names: Yellowtail Damselfish, Dusky Damselfish
Origin: Indo-Pacific – including the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines
Light Requirements: Moderate to high
Diet: Omnivorous – thrives on a mix of marine flakes, micro pellets, frozen mysis/brine shrimp, and marine algae
Maximum Size: 6–7 cm
Temperament: Peaceful to mildly territorial
Care Level: Easy
Aquarium Setup:
Perfect for marine aquariums of 60 litres or more, the Yellowtail Damselfish prefers plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing. Its peaceful temperament makes it an excellent choice for community reef tanks, especially when kept singly or in a bonded pair. In larger tanks, small groups can be kept together if introduced simultaneously to avoid hierarchy disputes. Provide open swimming areas alongside structured spaces.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Growth and Maintenance:
Neopomacentrus nemurus is hardy, adaptable, and generally peaceful—traits that make it a great candidate for beginner marine keepers. It thrives in reef environments and adjusts well to tank life with stable water parameters and regular feeding. Males may display minor territorial behaviour during breeding, but overall aggression is limited.
Care Tips:
✔ Introduce multiple individuals together to minimise aggression
✔ Feed small, varied meals 1–2 times daily
✔ Provide ample live rock and structure for security
✔ Great for nano reef tanks and peaceful setups
✔ Use a secure lid—like most damsels, they can jump when startled
Compatibility:
Well-suited to peaceful community tanks. Compatible with clownfish, small wrasses, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, and shrimp. Unlike more aggressive damselfish, N. nemurus is not prone to excessive territorial behaviour, making it a calm tankmate in mixed settings.
Availability:
Occasionally available in the Australian marine trade. Ask us about current stock, group pricing, or compatibility with your existing setup.
Disclaimer:
"While generally peaceful, males may show mild territoriality during breeding. Best introduced alongside other peaceful species in well-scaped tanks."
