A bold splash of electric blue and sunshine yellow, the Yellow Belly Damselfish (Chrysiptera hemicyanea) is a small yet striking reef-safe fish perfect for adding vibrant colour to any saltwater aquarium. Known for its hardiness and spunky personality, this damselfish is ideal for beginners, though it can get a bit territorial in close quarters. Its vivid body, with a rich sapphire top and bright golden underside, makes it a standout even in larger reef systems.

Availability:
Regularly available in the Australian aquarium trade. Due to their durability, colour, and affordability, they're a popular choice for new and seasoned marine hobbyists alike. Ask us about pair availability or grouping options for larger tanks.

Disclaimer:
"Due to natural variation, colouration may differ slightly based on lighting, mood, and age."

Species: Chrysiptera hemicyanea
Common Names: Yellow Belly Damselfish, Azure Damselfish (not to be confused with C. hemicyanea)
Origin: Indo-Pacific – reefs and lagoons from Indonesia to the Philippines
Light Requirements: Moderate to high – brighter lighting enhances colour
Diet: Omnivorous – eats pellets, flake, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and marine algae
Maximum Size: Up to 6.5 cm
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Care Level: Easy

Aquarium Setup:
Best kept in aquariums of 60 litres or larger, with live rock structures for hiding and territory. Although small, they pack a punch in personality, so space and visual barriers help minimise squabbles. They can be kept singly, in bonded pairs, or in groups (only in large setups). Great for nano reefs, but avoid housing with other small, passive fish in tight spaces.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

Growth and Maintenance:
These damselfish are fast growers and long-lived when kept in stable conditions. Known for their strong immune systems, they tolerate fluctuations better than many marine species, but pristine water and proper nutrition ensure top health and colour. Avoid mixing with other damselfish species unless you have a larger system with ample territory.

Care Tips:
✔ Feeding: Offer a mix of meaty and plant-based foods
✔ Housing: Provide rock caves and plenty of visual barriers
✔ Tankmates: Pair with other semi-aggressive or fast-moving species
✔ Grouping: Only one per tank under 120 L, or a bonded pair
✔ Water Quality: Stable parameters and low nitrates keep them thriving

Compatibility:
Compatible with most reef-safe tankmates, including clownfish, gobies, tangs, and wrasses. Can become nippy toward shy or slow fish like firefish, blennies, or cardinalfish, especially in smaller tanks. Reef-safe – will not nip at coral, inverts, or clams.
