While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .

The Emerald Catfish (Corydoras splendens), also known as the Emerald Green Cory, is a larger and more robust member of the Corydoras family. Unlike its smaller cousins, this species boasts a shimmering metallic green body with hints of bronze or blue, giving it a jewel-like appearance in community aquariums. Active, hardy, and social, they are excellent bottom-dwellers that add both beauty and utility as natural substrate cleaners.
Species: Corydoras splendens
Common Names: Emerald Catfish, Green Corydoras, Emerald Green Cory
Origin: South America – primarily found in rivers and floodplains of Peru, Brazil, and Colombia
Light Requirements: Low to moderate – colours intensify under subdued lighting
Diet: Omnivorous – sinking pellets, wafers, frozen/live bloodworms, daphnia, and blanched vegetables
Maximum Size: 7–9 cm
Temperament: Peaceful, shoaling, best in groups of 5+
Care Level: Easy
Aquarium Setup:
Best suited to aquariums of 100 litres or more with a fine sand substrate to protect their sensitive barbels. Add driftwood, smooth stones, and live plants for natural shelter while leaving open sandy areas for foraging. They prefer aquariums with gentle currents and good oxygenation, replicating their native riverine environments.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–28°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 2–15 dGH
Growth and Maintenance:
Emerald Catfish are hardy and adaptable but thrive in stable, well-maintained tanks. They are continuous bottom foragers and should be fed sinking foods to ensure they aren’t outcompeted. Their metallic sheen becomes more vibrant with a high-quality diet and clean water.
Care Tips:
✔ Keep in groups for natural shoaling behaviour
✔ Use sand or smooth fine gravel to protect barbels
✔ Supplement staple foods with protein-rich frozen/live treats
✔ Provide driftwood and shaded spots for resting
✔ Perform regular water changes to maintain pristine conditions
Compatibility:
A peaceful addition to community aquariums. Suitable tankmates include tetras, rasboras, angelfish, gouramis, and other non-aggressive fish. Avoid large predators.
Availability:
Moderately available in the aquarium trade. Typically sold as juveniles (4–5 cm) that develop their brilliant emerald sheen as they mature.
Disclaimer:
As a live animal, appearance may vary depending on age, sex, and size. Juveniles may appear duller in colour but will gain vibrancy as they mature.
