While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .
Our friendly team will be happy to assist and provide the most up-to-date information on current stock.

Graceful, unusual, and surprisingly hardy, the Gold Halfbeak (Dermogenys pusilla) is a surface-dwelling oddball with a shimmering golden sheen and a distinctive extended lower jaw. Native to calm, shallow waters across Southeast Asia, this livebearing species glides near the surface with a beak-like elegance, making it a captivating choice for aquarists after something a little different. Its peaceful nature and small size make it ideal for planted community tanks—provided its tankmates are just as chill.
Species: Dermogenys pusilla
Common Names: Gold Halfbeak, Wrestling Halfbeak, Malayan Halfbeak
Origin: Southeast Asia – Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia
Light Requirements: Moderate
Diet: Omnivorous – accepts floating foods such as micro pellets, crushed flakes, freeze-dried insects, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, and finely chopped frozen foods
Maximum Size: 5–7 cm
Temperament: Peaceful, though males can spar
Care Level: Intermediate
Aquarium Setup:
Gold Halfbeaks do best in aquariums of 40 litres or more, with a tight-fitting lid (they jump!) and minimal surface agitation. These fish spend most of their time at the surface, so low flow and floating plants are appreciated. Keep in small groups, ideally with one male to several females to reduce sparring. They're livebearers, and with the right conditions, they may breed in captivity.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: 5–15 dGH
Growth and Maintenance:
Halfbeaks are relatively undemanding once settled. They prefer calm companions and don’t compete well with fast, boisterous feeders. Regular feeding with quality floating foods supports good health and colour. While not aggressive, males may "wrestle" for dominance, so avoid keeping multiple males in tight quarters.
Care Tips:
✔ Use a secure lid—jumping is common when startled
✔ Provide floating plants for cover and confidence
✔ Feed floating foods—they rarely venture lower in the tank
✔ Keep in a group with a single male to reduce conflict
✔ Ideal for long, shallow tanks with calm flow
Compatibility:
Best with peaceful, small tankmates like rasboras, small tetras, Corydoras, dwarf gouramis, or shrimp. Avoid nippy or fast-moving species. Not suited to tanks with aggressive feeders or heavy surface disturbance.
Availability:
Occasionally available in the Australian aquarium trade. These fish are increasingly popular with nano tank and planted tank keepers. Ask us about group availability and compatible species for a surface-level community setup.
Disclaimer:
"Gold Halfbeaks are sensitive to rough handling and prefer stable, peaceful tank environments. Always keep a secure lid to prevent accidental escapes."
