While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .
Our friendly team will be happy to assist and provide the most up-to-date information on current stock.

Quirky, social, and always on the move, the Yo-Yo Loach (Botia lohachata) is a lively freshwater species named for its distinctive pattern—resembling the letters "Y-O" along its silvery sides. Native to fast-flowing rivers in northern India and Nepal, this striking bottom-dweller brings both personality and pest control to the aquarium, often helping keep snail populations in check while adding a fun, curious energy to the lower levels of your tank.
Species: Botia lohachata
Common Names: Yo-Yo Loach, Pakistani Loach
Origin: Northern India, Nepal, Bangladesh – fast-moving streams and rivers
Light Requirements: Low to moderate
Diet: Omnivorous – feeds on sinking pellets, live or frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), snails, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables
Maximum Size: Up to 13–15 cm
Temperament: Peaceful but active; semi-aggressive when stressed or overcrowded
Care Level: Intermediate
Aquarium Setup:
Yo-Yo Loaches do best in well-oxygenated tanks of 120 litres or more, with sandy or smooth gravel substrate and plenty of hiding spaces like driftwood, caves, or dense plants. They are social fish and should be kept in groups of 3 or more to reduce stress and territorial behaviour. A secure lid is essential—they’re known for their escape artistry and occasional acrobatics.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 5–12 dGH
Growth and Maintenance:
Yo-Yo Loaches grow steadily and can live for 8–10 years with proper care. They’re very curious and may dig in substrate or root around plants, so robust planting and secure décor are recommended. They’re active during the day but love to rest in groups under cover. Their playful "yo-yoing" behaviour is a source of constant entertainment!
Care Tips:
✔ Always keep in groups to avoid aggression
✔ Provide plenty of cover and hiding places
✔ Use smooth substrate to protect their sensitive barbels
✔ Feed a varied, sinking diet to maintain health and colour
✔ Perform regular water changes—they’re sensitive to poor quality
Compatibility:
Excellent for peaceful community aquariums. Compatible with tetras, rasboras, gouramis, danios, Corydoras, and non-aggressive cichlids. May nip fins if underfed or kept alone. Avoid housing with very small or delicate inverts.
Availability:
Commonly available in the Australian aquarium trade. Ask us about group availability or suitable tankmates for your setup.
Disclaimer:
"Yo-Yo Loaches require stable water parameters and should always be kept in groups to prevent stress-related aggression. May uproot delicate plants or dig in substrate."
