While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .

One of the most striking and bold clownfish varieties, the Goldstripe Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus) is adored for its deep maroon body contrasted by thick golden stripes. Unlike smaller, gentler clownfish species, the Goldstripe Maroon is larger, more territorial, and brimming with personality, making it a commanding centrepiece in marine aquariums. Its rich colouration deepens with age, while juveniles often display lighter bars that gradually turn golden as they mature.
Species: Premnas biaculeatus
Common Names: Goldstripe Maroon Clownfish, Gold Bar Maroon Clownfish
Origin: Indo-Pacific – reefs and lagoons around Sumatra and nearby regions
Light Requirements: Moderate to high – thrives under reef aquarium lighting
Diet: Omnivorous – enjoys a varied diet of marine flakes, pellets, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and algae-based foods
Maximum Size: 15–17 cm
Temperament: Aggressive – especially territorial when paired or hosting an anemone
Care Level: Easy to Intermediate
Aquarium Setup:
Best kept in aquariums of 150 litres or more with live rock and open swimming areas. Goldstripe Maroon Clownfish are reef-safe and will happily host in large anemones such as Entacmaea quadricolor (Bubble Tip Anemone). Due to their aggressive nature, they are best kept singly or as a mated pair, and tankmates should be chosen carefully. Provide secure rockwork to establish territory and minimise aggression.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Hardness: 8–12 dKH
Growth and Maintenance:
Robust and hardy, these clownfish are long-lived and can survive 10 years or more with proper care. As sequential hermaphrodites, the dominant fish in a pair will become female, while the smaller will remain male. Their gold stripes develop with maturity, with juveniles typically showing white bands that shift to gold over time.
Care Tips:
✔ Keep singly or as a bonded pair to avoid conflict
✔ Provide hosting anemones for natural behaviour (Bubble Tip Anemone recommended)
✔ Avoid housing with very small, delicate tankmates
✔ Introduce as one of the last fish in community aquariums
✔ Ensure a secure lid—though rare, clownfish can jump when startled
Compatibility:
Reef-safe with corals but aggressive towards other clownfish and similar-shaped fish. Best housed with semi-aggressive species such as tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and larger gobies. Avoid mixing with other clownfish species in all but the largest systems.
Availability:
Regularly available in the Australian aquarium trade. Often sold as juveniles, with colours and bar development intensifying as they age. Captive-bred specimens are common and generally hardier.
Disclaimer:
As live animals, Goldstripe Maroon Clownfish may vary in size, markings, and colour intensity depending on age, genetics, and environment.
