While we make every effort to ensure that our online stock levels are accurate and up to date, some products—particularly those that are perishable or subject to daily changes—may vary in availability. This includes livestock, fish, corals, and both fresh and frozen foods. Due to the nature of these items and their dependence on factors such as shipment schedules, health status, and in-store demand, availability can change rapidly and may not always be reflected in real time on our website.
To avoid disappointment, we strongly encourage customers to confirm the availability of these products before placing an order or visiting In-Store. You can do this easily by using the "Ask a Question" tab on the product page or by calling us directly on 0460 961 696 .

A brilliant burst of electric blue with a striking yellow tail, the Blue Yellowtail Damselfish is a popular choice for marine aquarists due to its stunning colour, hardiness, and adaptability. Small but bold, this species brings movement and contrast to reef and fish-only setups. It’s an excellent option for beginners and seasoned reefkeepers alike—provided it's housed with care to manage its occasional feistiness.
Species: Chrysiptera parasema
Common Names: Blue Yellowtail Damselfish, Yellowtail Blue Damselfish
Origin: Western Pacific – coral reefs around the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea
Light Requirements: Moderate
Diet: Omnivorous – enjoys marine flakes, pellets, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae
Maximum Size: 6–7 cm
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Care Level: Easy
Aquarium Setup:
Best kept in tanks of 80 litres or more with plenty of rockwork, hiding places, and open swimming space. Suitable for both reef and fish-only systems. While generally peaceful when young or in larger tanks, adults can become territorial—especially in smaller setups. Can be kept singly or in small groups introduced at the same time.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Growth and Maintenance:
This species is long-lived (5–8 years) and extremely hardy. It adapts well to captivity, readily accepting most foods and tolerating a wide range of conditions. While small, it holds its own in active marine setups and can be an effective starter fish for new tanks.
Care Tips:
✔ Introduce to aquascaped tanks with rockwork to reduce aggression
✔ Avoid keeping with other damselfish unless in large systems
✔ Feed a varied diet for best colour and health
✔ Monitor behaviour when mixing with timid or small fish
✔ Excellent candidate for pest-free quarantine setups
Compatibility:
Compatible with most semi-aggressive and peaceful marine species including clownfish, wrasses, gobies, tangs, and blennies. Use caution when mixing with other damselfish, as territorial disputes may arise.
Availability:
Common and readily available in the Australian marine aquarium trade. Often sold as juveniles—mature colouration develops early and remains vivid.
Disclaimer:
While generally peaceful, individual temperaments can vary. Always observe interactions when introducing to new tankmates, and provide plenty of territory to prevent squabbling.
