A flash of blue with a bold yellow punch, the Yellow Tail Damsel (Neopomacentrus azysron) is a stunning and resilient marine fish, ideal for beginner aquarists or seasoned reefkeepers alike. Native to the coral-rich shallows of the Indo-Pacific, this species combines hardiness with eye-catching contrast, making it a favourite in both nano reefs and larger marine systems.
Species: Neopomacentrus azysron
Common Names: Yellow Tail Damsel, Yellowtail Demoiselle
Origin: Indo-Pacific – from the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea to the Philippines and Indonesia
Light Requirements: Not specific – thrives under standard reef lighting
Diet: Omnivorous – enjoys high-quality marine flakes, pellets, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood
Maximum Size: 6–7 cm
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; territorial with conspecifics and similar-sized fish
Care Level: Easy
Aquarium Setup:
Best suited to marine aquariums of 60 litres or more, with ample rockwork for darting and hiding. Yellow Tail Damsels are bold swimmers that establish a territory quickly, particularly in smaller setups. In larger tanks, they’re less dominant and can be housed in groups or mixed communities. They do well in both FOWLR and reef tanks, but may become feisty if space is limited.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.023–1.025
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Growth and Maintenance:
Yellow Tail Damsels are long-lived for their size and can thrive for 5–8+ years in well-maintained systems. They are excellent starter fish due to their adaptability and minimal care needs. Their brilliant electric-blue bodies and bright yellow tails remain vibrant with a proper diet and stable conditions.
Care Tips:
✔ Provide rocky structure for territory and shelter
✔ Introduce as one of the first fish to minimise territoriality
✔ Feed a varied diet to maintain colour and vitality
✔ Avoid overcrowding with similar damsels or small passive fish
✔ Ideal in beginner reef tanks or hardy community setups
Compatibility:
Suitable for semi-aggressive community tanks, especially with other fast-moving fish like clownfish, wrasses, gobies, and tangs. May nip at shy or slow-moving species in tight spaces. Typically reef-safe – does not bother coral or inverts.
Availability:
Readily available in the Australian marine trade and popular for new reef tank setups. Juveniles are most commonly sold around 3–4 cm. Inexpensive, colourful, and robust—an ideal introductory marine species.
