Chubby, charming, and unmistakably unique, the Pearlscale Goldfish is the bubble-wrap-covered sweetheart of the fancy goldfish world. This round-bodied variety is known for its distinctive raised, domed scales that give it a pearly appearance—like someone sprinkled gemstones across a golf ball with fins.
Despite their fancy look, Pearlscales are relatively hardy and do well in cool water aquariums or ponds. They thrive in peaceful community setups with other slow-swimming goldfish and are best appreciated from a side view, where their round form and waddling swim style can be fully admired.
Species: Carassius auratus
Common Names: Pearlscale Goldfish, Ping Pong Goldfish
Origin: China (selectively bred)
Light Requirements: Moderate
Diet: Omnivorous – Feed sinking pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), and occasional treats like bloodworms or gel foods
Maximum Size: 15–20 cm
Temperament: Peaceful and social
Care Level: Intermediate
Aquarium Setup:
Pearlscales require at least 75 litres per fish due to their size and waste output. Use a fine substrate or bare bottom to prevent injury to their delicate bellies. Decor should be smooth and rounded—no sharp edges! These goldfish prefer cooler water (18–22°C) and need strong filtration with gentle flow. Avoid housing them with faster, nippier tankmates.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 18–22°C
pH: 6.5–7.5
Hardness: 5–15 dGH
Growth and Maintenance:
With proper care, Pearlscales can live for 10–15 years or more. Their unique scales are prone to damage, so handle them gently (if at all) and keep tank decor minimal and safe. Avoid high-protein diets or overfeeding, as Pearlscales are prone to buoyancy issues due to their rounded shape and compressed organs.
Care Tips:
✔ Feed sinking foods to prevent surface gulping
✔ Provide good filtration with gentle current
✔ Avoid sharp or rough decorations
✔ Perform regular water changes to maintain water quality
Compatibility:
Best housed with other slow-moving fancy goldfish like Ranchus, Orandas, or Fantails. Avoid slim-bodied, fast swimmers like Comets or Common Goldfish, as they may outcompete Pearlscales for food.
Availability:
Common in the trade and available in a range of colours including red, white, calico, and chocolate. Look for healthy individuals with well-defined scale structure and balanced swimming.
