Charming, hardy, and always busy at the bottom, the Tail-Spot Corydoras (Corydoras caudimaculatus) is a small South American catfish known for its distinctive black patch at the base of the tail. With a silvery-gold body dusted in speckled markings, this Corydoras is both attractive and highly functional as a peaceful substrate cleaner. Active, social, and endlessly endearing, it makes an excellent choice for planted and community aquariums.

Species: Corydoras caudimaculatus
Common Names: Tail-Spot Corydoras, Caudimaculatus Cory
Origin: South America – native to the upper Paraná River Basin in Brazil

Light Requirements: Low to moderate – prefers shaded tanks with plants and driftwood
Diet: Omnivorous – sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen/live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables
Maximum Size: 5–6 cm
Temperament: Peaceful, social, shoaling – best kept in groups of 6+
Care Level: Easy

Aquarium Setup:
Thrives in aquariums of 60 litres or larger with a soft sand substrate to protect delicate barbels. Provide live plants, driftwood, and smooth stones to mimic their natural habitat, while leaving open sandy areas for foraging. A gentle flow with clean, oxygen-rich water is ideal.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 2–12 dGH

Growth and Maintenance:
Tail-Spot Corydoras are hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for beginners. They constantly sift through the substrate for food, helping to keep the tank clean. A varied diet ensures their health and encourages natural behaviour. Lifespan is typically 5 years or more with good care.

Care Tips:
✔ Always keep in groups of 6 or more
✔ Provide sand or fine gravel to prevent barbel damage
✔ Supplement diet with live or frozen protein-rich foods
✔ Perform regular water changes to maintain excellent water quality
✔ Avoid sharp décor that may injure their delicate underbellies

Compatibility:
Excellent community fish, pairing well with tetras, rasboras, gouramis, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful species. Avoid large or predatory fish.

Availability:
Moderately available in the Australian aquarium trade. Juveniles may appear less vividly marked, with adult colouration and the tail-spot becoming more defined as they mature.

Disclaimer:
As live animals, variations in size, markings, and colour intensity may occur depending on age and environment.
